Year 9

The Year Group saint for Year 9 is St Teresa of Calcutta

Year 9 identity is ‘My Options’

Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta was a Catholic nun and missionary who dedicated her life to serving the poorest and most vulnerable. She founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950, providing care for the sick, homeless, and dying around the world. Known for her compassion and humility, she received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She founded the Missionaries of Charity, a religious congregation devoted to caring for “the poorest of the poor.” Her work spanned caring for the sick, homeless, and dying, often in the most challenging conditions.  Mother Teresa was canonized as a saint on September 4, 2016, and remains an enduring symbol of love and selfless service.

In Year 9, we are dedicated to cultivating a culture of ambition and achievement. Our vision is to inspire every student to set and pursue meaningful goals, deciding which option subjects will help them to achieve these goals. We believe that by fostering a supportive and dynamic environment, we empower our students to reach their full potential and become confident, goal-oriented individuals ready to navigate their future paths with purpose and passion. Together, we are committed to making Year 9 a transformative journey marked by growth, discovery, and success.

Year 9 Assessment

In Year 9, students are required to choose their GCSE or equivalent option subjects, marking an important milestone in their educational journey. The process is designed to support students in making informed and thoughtful decisions about the courses they will pursue in Years 10 and 11.

Each student in Year 9 is provided with their numerical minimum expected grade in each subject which is a change from Year 7 and Year 8. By sharing the minimum expected grades, we aim to help students understand what they are capable of and guide them in selecting option choices that suit them.

To monitor and track the students’ academic progress, there are two data collection points during the year in the spring and summer term. Both academic performance and attitudes to learning are assessed, and feedback is shared with students and a report is sent out to parents.

Parents Evening is combined with an Options Evening. This evening is an essential part of the option choices process, offering parents and students an opportunity to discuss the academic progress and option selections in more detail. Key members of staff, will deliver presentations to both parents and students, explaining the options process, outlining the curriculum for each subject, and providing guidance on how to make the best choice.
