Through the gifts of the Holy Spirit, the example of Jesus Christ and under the patronage of St. Catherine of Sienna, the Faculty of Religious Education aims to equip each pupil with the skills to succeed in life.

Pupils are challenged to become the best possible version of them self both academically and personally. We believe in holistically developing our young pupils to become motivated learners and philosophers, who embrace challenges, learn from mistakes and ultimately know how they can develop their understanding.

From the foundation of a strong Catholic faith and ethos, we serve in order to lead our pupils to achieve whilst developing a love of all races and faiths, a love of learning, a love of others and a love of one’s self.

WJEC Eduqas GCSE Religious Studies Route B

Years 7 and 8

In KS3 pupils follow a curriculum that addresses the basics of belief, predominately in Catholicism, but also looking at the other Abrahamic religions; addressing why we believe in God, what we believe about God and the world around us, the history of these religions and how a belief in God affects believers. This provides the foundation for greater in depth study at GCSE.

Year 9 to 11

In Year 9 all pupils follow a curriculum that explores Catholic teaching on Relationships and Marriage, before they start to look at Holy Scripture and Judaism. Here they will learn key skills that will help them in their GCSE studies that start in year 10.

In Years 10 & 11 pupils start the WJEC Eduqas GCSE Religious Studies Route B. This involves a study of three topics: Foundation Catholic Theology (with a focus on Origins & Meaning and Good & Evil), Applied Catholic Theology (looking at Life & Death and Sin & Forgiveness) and finally a study of the teachings and practices of Judaism.

Assessment in Religious Education

Formative – Every half term

  1. Multiple Choice quiz, this assessment is designed to provide insight into the understanding of pupils about the content of the course and test the deeper cognitive ability of pupils.
  2. Mid Assessment point will consist of 3 standardised GCSE style questions testing skills of definition, description and explanation (a, b and c questions). This will be self-assessed by pupils and DIRT completed which the teacher will then mark and comment on.
  3. Topic Recap sheets to be completed during the topics learning cycle to be peer assessed and corrected during DIRT.

Summative – Every half term

  • To be completed at the end of a topic, a GCSE style standardised evaluation (d) question. This will be marked by staff pupils and a DIRT task which the teacher will then mark and give further feedback on.
